The Depth Of God's Love
• Dr. Bob Sawvelle
I was reminded of the well-known Christian hymn Amazing Grace, composed by John Newton in 1779. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind but now I see. Newton, a slave trader, experienced a conversion to Christ during a storm off the coast of Ireland in 1748. Crying out to God for mercy, he discovered the depths of God’s love. Ultimately, he left slave trading to become an ordained Anglican minister. Many of us can relate to the lyrics of this song, thankful for God’s grace and mercy bestowed upon us through Jesus. Amazing grace, scandalous grace, that reaches down to rescue us!
